U.S. and China Schedule AI Talks for September

The United States and China will hold their first official artificial intelligence dialogue under President Donald Trump in September. These talks follow a May summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping and are scheduled to occur before Xi's planned visit to the U.S. on September 24.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will lead the American delegation. The discussions will focus on risks associated with powerful frontier AI models, specifically those that could enhance military capabilities, facilitate cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, or disrupt labor markets.

Beijing has requested technical engagement regarding the U.S.-developed Mythos model and is seeking clarity on potential U.S. restrictions on Chinese open-weight models. Bessent stated that future discussions would be "aimed at halting proliferation of powerful AI models ... to non-state actors."
