Vladimir Putin Establishes Non-Negotiable Security Zone in Ukraine
Vladimir Putin announced the creation of a security zone within Ukrainian territory to protect Russia's border regions following previous Ukrainian incursions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on October 16 the establishment of a security zone within Ukrainian territory along the border. Speaking from a military command post, Putin stated the operation responds to Ukraine's 2024-25 incursion into the western Kursk region of Russia. He declared that the creation of this zone is non-negotiable and will not be a subject for potential peace negotiations with Kyiv.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov provided technical details of the operation, stating the planned security zone spans 660km. According to Peskov, Russian forces currently control approximately 70% of that designated area. Putin asserted that the Russian armed forces were tasked with both expelling enemy forces from Russian land and establishing this security zone in adjacent territory to ensure the absolute security of Russia's border regions.
