Trump Warns Taiwan Against Independence Following Beijing Summit

President Donald Trump cautioned Taiwan against declaring independence and characterized pending arms sales as negotiating chips after a high-stakes summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Following a two-day summit in Beijing with President Xi Jinping, Donald Trump warned Taiwan against seeking a formal declaration of independence, stating he is not looking for a conflict that would require U.S. forces to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war. Trump signaled a shift in U.S. policy by characterizing a pending $14 billion arms package as a "very good negotiating chip" and suggested that future sales might depend on China, despite the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te responded by asserting that the Republic of China is already a sovereign, independent democratic nation and that there is no separate "Taiwan independence" issue. Lai defended U.S. arms sales as a vital deterrent against Chinese aggression and stated that Taiwan would not be sacrificed or traded. To ease tensions, Taiwan expressed openness to a direct conversation between Trump and Lai, a move that would break a decades-long diplomatic precedent.

In Beijing, President Xi Jinping warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push U.S.-China relations into a dangerous situation and lead to "clashes and even conflicts." Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun further condemned the Lai administration as the primary source of regional instability, claiming that any attempt to seek independence with external backing is delusional.

While U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the Department of State maintained that U.S. policy remains unchanged, House Speaker Mike Johnson affirmed congressional resolve against Chinese territorial seizure. Meanwhile, Canadian MP Michael Chong challenged Chinese warnings by traveling to Taipei to meet with Lai, asserting Canadian parliamentary sovereignty.
