US and India Target $500 Billion Bilateral Trade Goal

President Donald Trump announced the US and India are close to a trade deal as officials aim to double bilateral trade to $500 billion.

The United States and India are working to double their bilateral trade to over $500 billion within the next three years, up from a current record of $240 billion. Donald Trump announced on October 21 that the two nations are pretty close to reaching a bilateral trade agreement, describing the upcoming arrangement as a much different kind of deal than previous pacts.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor announced the $500 billion target during a reception in Mumbai, noting that President Trump provided a mandate for concrete results. The economic expansion focuses on semiconductors, critical minerals, energy, defense, and superintelligence. This follows a February framework for an interim agreement aimed at improving market access for pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited India to discuss trade, energy, and technology, characterizing the strategic alignment between the two powers as extraordinary. While negotiations continue to resolve disputes over tariffs and regulatory barriers, official data for FY 2025-26 shows India's merchandise exports to the US at $87.31 billion and imports at $53.45 billion. Recent discussions between Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer have focused on the finer details of the agreement amid shifts in the US tariff landscape.
