Elon Musk Funds Ken Paxton in Tight Texas Senate Race
Democratic candidate James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton battle for a Texas Senate seat amid massive financial backing from Elon Musk and visits from Donald Trump.
The U.S. Senate race in Texas has become a national focal point as Democratic candidate James Talarico and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton compete in a contest now classified as a toss-up. Talarico currently holds a narrow lead in several polls, attempting to become the first Democrat to win a statewide office in Texas in over 30 years.
Billionaire Elon Musk has intervened heavily in the race, donating $158 million to a Republican super PAC to fund attack ads against Talarico. Musk has publicly endorsed Paxton, claiming there is something "deeply wrong" with Talarico. In response, Talarico has framed Musk as a "political boogeyman" and criticized a system that allows wealthy donors to buy political influence.
Paxton's campaign has focused on religious identity and the support of President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to hold rallies in Corpus Christi and Lubbock on October 27. However, Paxton continues to face scrutiny over his 2023 impeachment by the Texas House for bribery and abuse of office, though he was later acquitted by the state Senate. Talarico has spent $59 million on advertisements highlighting these corruption allegations.
The race is further complicated by a divide among moderate Republicans following Paxton's primary victory over Senator John Cornyn. While Paxton utilizes Trump's endorsement to secure the GOP base, Talarico is targeting disaffected Republicans with a platform focused on affordability and public education. Early voting is currently underway across the state with record-breaking turnout in several counties.
