Trump Pressures Netanyahu to Withdraw Forces from Lebanon

President Donald Trump is pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to withdraw military forces from southern Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. The diplomatic push follows a request from Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to expand "pilot zones" designed to facilitate Israeli withdrawal and the deployment of Lebanese troops. Netanyahu, who met Trump in Washington on Monday, has reportedly signaled to his cabinet that he will resist these pressures.

Simultaneously, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk warned that Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon could amount to war crimes. Following a four-day visit to Lebanon, Turk reported large-scale violations of international humanitarian law, citing the wholesale destruction of villages and the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas. Lebanese authorities reported 4,332 deaths and 12,236 injuries resulting from these actions. Turk also noted that Hezbollah rockets fired into Israeli populated areas killed civilians.

Tensions between Trump and Netanyahu extended to Iranian nuclear activity. Trump criticized Netanyahu for publicly announcing plans to provide evidence regarding the "Pickaxe Mountain" site. Trump warned that the U.S. would destroy the facility if Iran does not abandon its nuclear program and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This occurs as Lebanese and Israeli officials prepare for direct talks in Rome on August 4 to implement a June 26 framework deal involving the disarmament of Hezbollah and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
