European Leaders Warn of Potential Russian Attacks on NATO

European intelligence officials and government leaders warn that the Federal Government of Russia may launch attacks on NATO territory within months. Emmanuel Macron, President of France, described these warnings as well-documented and convened an emergency meeting in Paris to discuss the threat. He subsequently ordered increased protection for critical infrastructure and defense sites following intensifying Russian hybrid attacks.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk alerted parliament that Moscow could use drones or missiles to test Article 5, the alliance's mutual defense clause, to prove it is more theoretical than practical. Michal Koudelka, head of the Czech Republic's BIS, added that Russia might employ an escalate to de-escalate strategy involving limited incursions or false-flag provocations to pressure Europe into withdrawing support for Ukraine. These concerns follow a drone incident at Leipzig airport and Belarusian military exercises near the Polish and Lithuanian borders.

Conversely, security officials in Latvia and Estonia have urged caution. Normunds Mežviets, Director General of Latvia's VDD, stated there are no indications of an imminent attack, suggesting the threat may be a tactic to spread fear. Thomas Nilsson, head of Sweden's military intelligence, characterized Russian sabotage and negotiation efforts as negotiation theatre.

In response to the instability, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone of NATO confirmed the alliance is prepared for escalation. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed a counter-hybrid playbook to address sabotage and cyberattacks. The Federal Government of Russia has dismissed the reports, with President Vladimir Putin accusing Western governments of frightening their own populations.
