UK and US Link Iran to Foiled RAF Fairford Plot

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated Iran likely played a role in a suspected terror plot targeting RAF Fairford after five British nationals were arrested and later bailed.

British authorities arrested five British nationals in their early 20s on September 27 near RAF Fairford, a base used by the United States Air Force for strikes against Iranian missile sites. The operation began after a local farmer and one of the suspects reported three white vans and masked men blocking a road in Whelford. Police established a 400-meter cordon and evacuated 85 households while bomb disposal teams inspected the vehicles, which contained petrol but no improvised explosive devices.

Andy Burnham later announced there are "strong indications" that Iran played a part in the incident, which he described as deeply concerning. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted the plot "clearly involves the hand of a foreign actor," while President Donald Trump claimed the suspects were under long-term surveillance and intended to do "big damage."

The suspects were released on bail on September 28 under stringent conditions, a move Donald Trump criticized, questioning how authorities could give bail to terrorists. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London categorically rejected the allegations, calling them "unfounded and malicious speculations" designed to fuel "Iranophobia propaganda."

Security was heightened at other U.S.-operated bases, including RAF Lakenheath, which moved to Charlie alert. The incident follows previous warnings from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that any base used for aggression against Iranian territory is a legitimate target.
