India and Ukraine Seek to Restore Pre-War Trade Ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar extended greetings to the government and people of Ukraine on August 24, 2026, to mark the country's Independence Day. In a statement on X, Jaishankar expressed optimism regarding the further deepening of the bilateral partnership between New Delhi and Kyiv.

This diplomatic gesture follows a series of high-level engagements. In June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Evian, France, to review bilateral cooperation. During those talks, Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to peace and humanity, and both leaders agreed on the necessity of restoring trade ties to pre-war levels.

Further diplomatic activity occurred in July when Jaishankar and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha discussed developments in the Black Sea. During that exchange, Jaishankar condemned attacks on commercial shipping and Indian seafarers, advocating for the use of diplomacy and dialogue to resolve tensions.
