Trump Sets July 4 Deadline for EU Trade Deal

President Donald Trump threatened the European Union with significantly higher tariffs if it fails to implement the Turnberry trade agreement by July 4.

President Donald Trump has issued a July 4 deadline for the European Union to implement a trade framework established last July in Turnberry, Scotland. The president warned that failure to eliminate tariffs on U.S. industrial goods and provide duty-free quotas for American agricultural and sea products would result in tariffs rising to much higher levels. This ultimatum follows a recent action where Trump raised tariffs on EU vehicles from 15% to 25% due to alleged non-compliance.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer asserted that EU implementation is already past due and that the bloc has not yet fulfilled any of its trade deal obligations. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed confidence that the EU will meet the deadline. However, European Parliament trade committee chair Bernd Lange noted that there is still some way to go, as lawmakers are demanding tougher safeguards that would allow the EU to suspend the deal if the U.S. fails to comply.

The dispute is complicated by a February U.S. Supreme Court ruling that stripped Trump of the legal authority to declare an economic emergency to impose the initial pressure tariffs used to force negotiations. Additionally, reports indicate that Trump's demand to acquire Greenland has slowed the implementation process. During a call regarding the trade friction, Trump and von der Leyen also agreed that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon.
