Brazil and United States Establish Trade Negotiation Working Group
Brazil and the United States will create a working group to negotiate a trade agreement following meetings at the G20 Trade Ministers Meeting.
The Federal government of the United States and the Federal government of Brazil agreed to establish a working group to negotiate a potential trade agreement. The decision followed a meeting between United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers Meeting.
Washington is expected to submit a proposal in the coming weeks that defines the scope of the negotiations, with a specific focus on tariff and nontariff issues. This diplomatic push follows an August phone call between President Donald Trump and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The negotiations come as both nations manage significant trade tensions. The United States previously imposed 25% tariffs on specific Brazilian goods citing unfair trade practices, alongside 12.5% tariffs related to the enforcement of forced labor bans. In response to the current talks, President Lula da Silva stated that Brazil will not apply its reciprocity law regarding tariffs against the United States while these discussions are ongoing.
