Zelensky Pressures Russia for Autumn Peace Deal

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a strategy to pressure Russia into ending the war by autumn 2026 through a combination of diplomatic efforts, international sanctions, and long-range drone strikes. Speaking to ambassadors in Kiev, Zelensky stated that these actions aim to leave Moscow with no alternative but peace. This campaign includes "long-range sanctions," which Zelensky defines as strikes against Russian military and industrial infrastructure. This follows a 40-day intelligence operation that targeted logistics centers belonging to the Russian retailer Wildberries, including a facility in the Vladimir region, which Ukraine alleges provide drone components to Russian forces.

While pursuing a fall resolution, Zelensky is preparing for a potential winter of war by instructing diplomats to secure weapons and technical support. This includes the joint development of the Freyja missile defense system with European partners. Zelensky accused Vladimir Putin of delaying the conflict's end and preparing for further mobilization.

During a visit to Washington, Zelensky requested assistance from U.S. President Donald Trump and lawmakers to secure permission from Elon Musk to use the Starlink satellite system for guiding strikes inside Russia. Zelensky pitched this expanded use as a way to improve accuracy and reduce reliance on U.S. Patriot systems. Trump did not commit to the request and expressed hesitation regarding a previous pledge to allow Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles domestically, citing the difficulty of licensing such technology. In exchange for support, Zelensky offered the U.S. evidence of Russian assistance to Iran in targeting U.S. bases in the Middle East.
