Trump Demands Regional Normalization as Condition for Iran Peace Deal

Donald Trump pressured Muslim-majority nations to join the Abraham Accords and recognize Israel as a requirement for a regional settlement to end the war with Iran.

President Donald Trump is attempting a regional political reset by conditioning a peace deal with Iran on the mandatory expansion of the Abraham Accords. During a May 23 conference call with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain, Trump urged nations without diplomatic ties to Israel to normalize relations. He later amplified this demand on Truth Social, suggesting that Saudi Arabia and Qatar should lead the signing and warning that those who refuse show "bad intention" and should be excluded from the Iran deal.

These diplomatic pressures coincide with ongoing negotiations to end a conflict with Iran that began in February 2026. Current talks, mediated by Pakistan and facilitated in Doha, center on a 14-point memorandum regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the release of $25 billion in frozen Iranian assets, and limits on uranium enrichment. While U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism, Iranian officials have cautioned that a final agreement is not imminent.

The proposal has faced sharp resistance. Pakistan flatly rejected the mandate, with officials stating the accords conflict with their "fundamental ideologies." Saudi Arabia, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, maintains that normalization requires a clear and irreversible path toward a Palestinian state. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has insisted that any final deal must entirely eliminate Iran's nuclear threat and preserve Israel's right to conduct military operations in Lebanon.
