Trump Threatens Iran Strikes to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with massive military strikes, describing the current diplomatic window as a last chance to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump claimed that very good discussions are underway to wind down a five-month conflict that began in February with Operation Epic Fury. He recently paused planned large-scale attacks to allow for diplomacy, facilitated by Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Iran has officially denied conducting direct negotiations with Washington, asserting that its discussions are limited to coordinating safe shipping routes with Oman. Despite these contradictions, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism that a deal to restore freedom of movement could be reached imminently. Proposed terms include a maritime corridor along the Iranian coast and the introduction of maritime service fees shared between Iran and Oman.

Maritime instability persists as shipping traffic has plummeted. In early August, daily transits in the strait dropped to as few as two vessels. Multiple cargo ships, including the Minoan Pioneer, were struck by unknown projectiles near Oman, leaving at least one seafarer missing. Simultaneously, Iran-aligned Houthis have expanded the conflict by targeting Saudi airports and imposing a naval blockade in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, causing tankers to divert around the Cape of Good Hope.

U.S. military officials have warned that long-range missile stockpiles, including THAAD and Patriot interceptors, are dangerously low. Meanwhile, thousands of civilian sailors remain stranded in the Persian Gulf following Iranian seizures of commercial vessels, including ships owned by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co.
