Emmanuel Macron Attends Final UN General Assembly Before Exit

French President Emmanuel Macron is attending his final United Nations General Assembly in New York before he steps down from office in May. After ten years in power, Macron is not expected to introduce major new diplomatic initiatives during the visit. Instead, he will prioritize the replacement of the U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon before its mandate expires at the end of 2026.

Macron plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to ensure continued French involvement in those respective conflicts. He also intends to meet with filmmakers in New York to advocate for the protection of cinema's future.

In related diplomatic moves, France recently joined Canada and nine other nations in suspending trade with Jewish settlements in the West Bank, though Macron allowed the United Kingdom to lead the announcement. This follows a recent meeting in Paris where Macron convened leaders from Lebanon and Jordan to discuss the fortification of the Lebanese armed forces.
