Donald Trump Strains NATO Relations Over Greenland and Iran

President Donald Trump has alienated NATO allies through threats against Denmark, unilateral military action in Iran, and the imposition of trade tariffs.

President Donald Trump has severely strained relations with transatlantic allies during his second term through a series of provocative policy shifts and unilateral military actions. Tensions escalated after Trump threatened war with Denmark to acquire Greenland and suggested that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. In a national address, Trump declared he was finished with NATO due to the Greenland dispute and characterized his allies as lacking courage.

Allied responses have shifted toward active resistance. NATO members have denied U.S. jets access to their territories and refused to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a coalition to oppose both the United States and China. While UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer suggested deploying aircraft carriers to assist in the war on Iran, Trump rejected the offer, stating that the U.S. did not need assistance from those joining wars after they had already been won.

Further friction has arisen from economic and strategic pivots. Trump abrogated trade agreements to impose tariffs and reduced military aid to Ukraine to pressure European nations into purchasing American weaponry. Additionally, Trump launched a surprise war on Iran without consulting allies, while his peace envoy provided rhetorical support to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
