Trump Cancels Iran Attack as Tehran Negotiates Route with Oman

President Donald Trump canceled a planned major military assault on Iran over the weekend, claiming the perimeters of a deal to end a five-month war have been agreed upon. Trump stated that the framework, which includes support from Israel, requires the total reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran's nuclear threat.

Iranian officials have disputed these claims, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei characterizing Trump's statements as psychological warfare. Baghaei denied that Iran is engaged in direct or indirect negotiations with the United States and asserted that the Strait of Hormuz will not return to its pre-war status from before February 28, 2026. He attributed the waterway's closure to United States naval blockades and treaty violations.

While denying talks with Washington, Iran is nearing a final agreement with Oman to establish a new "middle-lane" maritime route. This proposed Traffic Separation Scheme aims to avoid traditional northern and southern corridors to ensure safe navigation while respecting Iranian sovereignty. Iran maintains that this shipping agreement with Muscat is a technical prerequisite and does not signal a full reopening of the strait.

Regional tensions remain high following U.S. strikes on Qeshm Island. Trump's decision to stand down was reportedly influenced by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who warned that further escalation could lead to Iranian attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure. Iran continues to seek administrative authority over the strait and the ability to levy service charges, a position the U.S. rejects.
