Pope Leo XIV Hails Oleshky Humanitarian Ceasefire

Pope Leo XIV expressed hope that a U.S.-brokered humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky will lead to broader peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

A temporary ceasefire in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky and parts of the Kherson region allowed for a critical humanitarian relief operation. Brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, the truce began on October 27 and lasted over three days, enabling the delivery of food, fuel, hygiene products, and medical supplies to the civilian population.

Pope Leo XIV expressed hope on November 1 that the cooperation required for this "humanitarian operation" would strengthen the willingness of both parties to engage in dialogue and lead to fresh peace initiatives. While the Pope spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on October 16, the Vatican clarified it did not play a direct role in arranging the specific six-day truce.

Coordination for the mission was led by Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova and Ukrainian commissioner Dmytro Lubinets. The operation provided evacuation options via 25 buses for residents to travel to either Russia or Ukrainian-controlled territory. The effort followed dangerous demining operations that resulted in two deaths, including a military engineer.

Despite the localized truce, fighting continues in other regions. However, President Zelensky indicated that peace negotiators are scheduled to meet for new talks in early November, with further U.S.-mediated peace talks expected to resume in Abu Dhabi next month.
