Trump Threatens to Rename Lake Ontario Amid Trade War

President Donald Trump announced that the United States is considering renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America following the collapse of trade negotiations with Canada. The threat accompanies an escalating trade war in which the Trump administration imposed 50 percent tariffs on approximately $20 billion of Canadian goods, including dairy and alcoholic beverages, over the weekend.

Trump further vowed to double tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel from 25 percent to 50 percent starting January 1, specifically targeting the province of Ontario. He has criticized Canada's sovereignty, blaming the nation for wildfire smoke and fentanyl smuggling, and suggested that Canada wants the benefits of being a U.S. state without actually being one.

Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the U.S. demands, accusing Washington of attempting to treat Canada as a subsidiary and seeking to destroy major industries including autos, steel, and aluminum. Carney also claimed the U.S. attempted to restrict Canadian trading partners and threatened French language and culture rights, specifically regarding streaming service content.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded by threatening to cut off electricity and critical mineral exports to the United States. The province of Ontario also funded U.S. television ads featuring Ronald Reagan to oppose the tariffs, with Ford stating that Reagan would be disgusted by Trump's current policies. Canada is preparing targeted retaliatory countermeasures, while Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne is coordinating support for affected workers.
