Ed Miliband Visits Washington to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband traveled to Washington on Wednesday for his first official visit to the United States in his current role. Miliband met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which he described as essential to easing cost-of-living pressures for British families following trade disruptions that inflated fuel and food prices.

The diplomatic agenda also included coordinating support for Ukraine against Russia's war and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Miliband further scheduled a meeting with World Bank President Ajay Banga to discuss climate change and global resilience after taking the UK's seat on the World Bank board.

The visit occurred amid significant diplomatic friction. The White House expressed deep concern over Prime Minister Andy Burnham's appointment of Miliband, citing the Foreign Secretary's history of criticizing President Donald Trump. Steve Bannon claimed the Trump administration warned the UK that appointing Miliband, whom he termed a socialist, would be injurious to the special relationship. US Ambassador Warren Stephens noted the historical disagreements, stating he hoped Miliband's views had changed.
