Passengers and Pilot Thwart Flydubai Hijacking Attempt

Captain Smit Machchhar and Israeli passengers prevented a co-pilot from crashing a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026.

On September 30, 2026, Smit Machchhar, an Indian captain for Flydubai, prevented a mass-casualty disaster on Flight FZ1073 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the flight, Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami attacked Machchhar with a cockpit crash axe, causing the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to plummet approximately 14,000 to 18,000 feet in under two minutes. Despite sustaining severe injuries to his head and torso, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to storm the flight deck and subdue al-Hammami. Two off-duty pilots on board then stabilized the aircraft and performed an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and UAE authorities characterized the incident as a terrorist attack, with Netanyahu stating al-Hammami had undergone "Islamist radical indoctrination" and intended to crash the plane into Ben Gurion Airport or the Azrieli Towers. Investigations revealed al-Hammami had been previously barred from flying by Oman Air due to extremist views, but Flydubai hired him without verifying this history. The event exposed a security loophole in Israel, where approximately 1,240 crew members from non-diplomatic nations had entered the country over the past year without proper vetting.

Following the incident, the UAE led a joint investigation with Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. While President Donald Trump suggested Iranian involvement and threatened retaliation, Israeli officials later indicated al-Hammami likely acted as a lone wolf. Machchhar was airlifted to Abu Dhabi for medical treatment and has been hailed as a hero by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel has since implemented stricter security screenings for all foreign pilots flying into the country.
