UK Pledges £17 Million for Chornobyl Power Plant Repairs

Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged £17 million to repair the Chornobyl power plant following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Government of the United Kingdom pledged £17 million to repair critical damage at the Chornobyl power plant caused by a Russian drone attack last year. The funding targets the restoration of the facility's protective shelter and ventilation systems to mitigate long-term environmental risks and corrosion.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the pledge during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where he affirmed the UK's continued support for Ukraine. This commitment comes as Ukraine faces growing uncertainty regarding U.S. support, including reports that military access to Starlink technology has been throttled in key areas.

Diplomatic tensions have also emerged within the West. European delegates rejected a proposal from U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to unfreeze certain Russian sovereign assets as a means to revive peace talks. European defence commissioner Andrius Kubilius responded to the shifting U.S. posture by stating that Europe must develop its own capabilities to reduce dependence.

Internal political pressure is increasing across Europe, with far-right parties in France and Germany calling for an end to the financing of Ukraine's war effort. In Germany, state parliament members passed a symbolic motion to end military support.
