U.S. Intelligence Warns Putin May Attack NATO Ally

U.S. intelligence agencies have updated their assessment of Russian aggression, reporting that Vladimir Putin may launch a limited assault on a NATO ally between this fall and 2029. The potential operations, which could include cyberattacks, small-scale land incursions on the eastern flank, or the deployment of unmarked armed groups, aim to create internal fractures within the alliance and test its resolve. This shift in intelligence follows a previous belief that Putin would avoid provoking NATO while focused on Ukraine, but officials now cite increasing pressure on the Russian president at home and on the battlefield.

Concurrent with these warnings, a debate has emerged within the U.S. government regarding critical munitions shortfalls. Some officials warn that transfers to Ukraine and conflicts with Iran have depleted stocks of Patriot, Stinger, and Precision Strike Missiles, potentially hampering deterrence against Russia and China. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, specifically warned the White House about a decrease in air defense interceptors.

White House and Pentagon spokespeople have denied these shortages. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell and White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly both maintained that the U.S. military possesses a ready arsenal sufficient to meet its strategic goals and defend national interests.
