Mark Carney Negotiates with Trump to Avert 50% Tariffs

Prime Minister Mark Carney is leading high-tempo negotiations in Washington to secure a comprehensive trade agreement with the United States before August 19. The deadline marks the date by which President Donald Trump intends to implement 50% tariffs on a basket of Canadian goods.

To resolve the standoff, the United States is demanding that Canada remove trade barriers it describes as irritants, specifically provincial liquor bans and trade controls on dairy. In exchange, Carney is seeking the total removal of all sector-specific tariffs imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, which currently affect Canada's lumber, auto, steel, and aluminum sectors. Current discussions include the possibility of a tariff quota for Canadian aluminum and steel imports.

While Carney has already made unilateral concessions by removing several retaliatory tariffs, he has indicated that Canada maintains options for further retaliation if the United States proceeds with the new levies.
