Trump Administration Doubles Steel and Aluminum Tariffs to 50 Percent

The Trump administration doubled tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25 percent to 50 percent as part of an ongoing trade war. The move has sparked warnings from the brewing industries in Maine and Michigan, where leaders claim the increases could devastate businesses by raising the cost of aluminum cans and other essential metals.

The Maine Brewers Guild reported that steel prices had already risen by 20 percent since original tariffs took effect in March. Industry representatives in both states noted that thin profit margins and shifting consumer habits make it difficult to pass these costs on to customers without losing competitiveness. The Michigan Brewers Guild added that these tariffs create further financial strain for companies already struggling with the rising costs of labor and barley.

Industry leaders are calling for a rollback to 2024 tariff levels and urging consumers to support local breweries and contact lawmakers to address the price hikes.
