U.S. and Iran Exchange Strikes Amid Ceasefire Proposals

The United States and Iran are engaged in a cycle of military escalation and naval blockades while mediators propose a 10-day ceasefire to revive diplomatic talks.

The United States and Iran are engaged in a violent cycle of military escalation, marked by 10 consecutive nights of U.S. airstrikes against Iranian territory. U.S. Central Command targeted military and civilian sites, including a nuclear power plant in Darkhovin and cities such as Tabriz, Bushehr, and Urmia, to degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles and drones at U.S. assets in Jordan, Kuwait, Syria, and Bahrain, while also targeting desalination plants in Kuwait and Iran.

President Donald Trump defended the strikes as retaliation for the deaths of U.S. service members, including two killed in Jordan and one who died during an ordnance detonation in Iraq. Iran reports at least 50 deaths and over 500 injuries from the strikes, while the U.S. has confirmed 17 personnel deaths since the conflict began on February 28. Tensions further escalated as a Malta-flagged vessel carrying Saudi oil caught fire in Omani waters, and Iran-backed Houthi rebels announced a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia in the Red Sea.

Despite the violence, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated Washington remains open to real diplomacy, though he criticized the Iranian economy as being in shambles due to the regime's funding of Hezbollah and Hamas. Mediators have proposed a 10-day ceasefire to revive a suspended memorandum of understanding. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian characterized the situation as a generalized war but indicated Iran has not withdrawn from framework deal provisions. Israel has opposed the ceasefire terms, arguing they fail to dismantle Iran's nuclear and missile capabilities.
