US Deploys Carrier Strike Group and Expands Iran Sanctions
The United States is increasing military pressure on Iran by deploying the USS Theodore Roosevelt and expanding economic sanctions on Iranian transport sectors.
The United States is intensifying military and economic pressure on Iran through a combination of naval deployments and expanded trade restrictions. The U.S. government deployed the USS Theodore Roosevelt and approximately 10,000 sailors and Marines to the Middle East, a move that potentially places three carrier strike groups within the region.
Economic pressure escalated on October 1, when the U.S. expanded sanctions to include major Iranian rail companies and automakers. These measures follow previous disruptions to aviation links and a U.S. blockade that has severely curtailed Iranian crude exports. Preliminary estimates indicate that no crude was loaded onto tankers in September, contributing to an economic crisis in Iran where inflation is nearing 90% and the rial has significantly devalued.
Diplomatic efforts remain deadlocked despite a proposal from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to restore nuclear inspector access in exchange for sanctions relief. In response to the military buildup, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned it would respond to any new attacks from the U.S. or Israel.
