Trump Makes Tariffs Permanent as US-India Trade Talks Stall

President Donald Trump announced in a December 17, 2025, year-end address that tariffs will now serve as a permanent pillar of US economic policy. Trump credited these measures with securing $18 trillion in investment and argued that tariffs encourage companies to move manufacturing to US soil to avoid import duties.

This policy shift has strained relations with India, which remains one of the most heavily tariffed countries in the world. Negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement have stalled over US demands for access to India's dairy and genetically modified crop markets, while the US has imposed tariffs as high as 50% to deter New Delhi from purchasing Russian oil. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described India's resistance to certain imports as a difficult nut to crack.

Despite the economic friction, both nations are attempting to maintain a strategic partnership. The US Embassy in India recently shared messages from Trump and Vice President JD Vance describing India as a great friend and strategic partner. Indian Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal stated that the two countries are very close to finalizing a framework deal, although India continues to resist compromises that would impact its farmers and small businesses.
