Donald Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Auto Imports

Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on all cars, trucks, auto parts, and steel imported from Canada. He cited claims that Canada has been "ripping off the United States of America for years" and described the country as one of the "worst Nations in the World to deal with" regarding trade.

To implement these measures, Trump utilized the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act of 1930. This move follows a Supreme Court ruling that found his previous use of emergency powers to enact tariffs unconstitutional.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by announcing retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on approximately 700 American products. Carney stated that Canada would not allow itself to be broken or owned by the United States, asserting that the government is keeping a promise to resist such pressure.
