US, Russia, and China Discuss Trilateral Summit in Shenzhen

Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping are discussing a potential trilateral summit in Shenzhen on November 18–19 to address nuclear weapons and trade.

The United States, Russia, and China are coordinating a potential trilateral summit between Presidents Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping. The meeting is proposed for November 18–19 in Shenzhen, China, on the sidelines of the APEC summit.

Donald Trump has expressed openness to the meeting, stating he would use the opportunity to discuss trade, nuclear weapons, and denuclearization. The Kremlin confirmed that preparations are underway, noting that Vladimir Putin proposed the summit to capitalize on warming ties with Trump. While the agenda includes nuclear arms control and the war in Ukraine, Russian sources suggest that substantive negotiations on Ukraine are not expected in Shenzhen.

Beijing has not yet given final approval for the trilateral event. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has only acknowledged communications regarding a bilateral meeting between Xi and Putin. Additionally, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier reported that Xi Jinping appeared confused by rumors of the trilateral meeting and emphasized that Europe must be involved in any peace talks regarding Ukraine.

Trump is scheduled to visit Manila for the ASEAN summit before traveling to China. He and Xi Jinping are also expected to meet in December during the G20 summit in Miami.
