Trump Coordinates with Japan After Summit with Xi Jinping

President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held two high-level contacts within one week to align security and economic strategies regarding China. The coordination began with a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, where Takaichi emphasized that the US-Japan alliance is essential for peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Following a three-day summit in Washington, Trump called Takaichi to provide a detailed account of his discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During that summit, Xi urged the United States to "oppose Taiwan independence" and handle the issue cautiously, requesting that Washington shift from its current position of not supporting independence to explicitly opposing it.

Trump characterized the US-China talks as a major step forward, noting agreements on artificial intelligence, trade, and tariffs. Despite these developments, Japan continues to seek assurances that its own national security interests remain central to the US strategy toward Beijing.
