U.S. Diesel Prices Hit $6.199 Per Gallon

Diesel prices in the United States reached a national average of $6.199 per gallon due to tight global distillate markets and depleted domestic inventories.

The Energy Information Administration reports that U.S. diesel prices reached a national average of $6.199 per gallon as of October 5, 2026. This surge created a price spread of approximately $1.85 per gallon over regular gasoline, driven by a severely tight global distillate market.

Global supply constraints stem from reduced refining activity in Russia, China, and the Middle East, alongside shipping disruptions linked to conflict involving Iran. While U.S. distillate production averaged 5.1 million barrels per day through August—the highest level since 2019—increased exports to Europe and other international markets have depleted domestic stocks.

Distillate inventories were roughly 13% below the five-year seasonal average by mid-September. Projections indicate that fourth-quarter inventories will remain 11% below average, likely keeping costs elevated through the harvest season and into winter. These conditions are expected to increase operational expenses for the agriculture and freight transportation sectors.
