Trump Lifts Russian Fuel Sanctions to Lower Diesel Prices
President Donald Trump temporarily lifted U.S. sanctions on Russian fuel to secure a diesel supply deal, sparking bipartisan criticism over the legality and morality of the move.
Donald Trump announced a deal on Friday for Russia to supply diesel to global markets, leading his administration to temporarily lift U.S. sanctions on Russian fuel. The president stated the move is intended to lower record-high diesel prices for American consumers and farmers.
The decision triggered immediate bipartisan backlash. Republican Senator Thom Tillis argued the action may be illegal and contradicts the intent of existing sanctions legislation, warning that Vladimir Putin would use the opportunity to undermine the president. Representative Don Bacon and former Vice President Mike Pence also criticized the deal, with Bacon stating that propping up the Russian war economy is morally wrong.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the administration's position, asserting that the government is using all available legal authorities to execute the deal. While some Republicans, including Senator John Barrasso, supported the president's effort to reduce costs, other members of the party have distanced themselves from the decision ahead of next month's congressional elections.
