Donald Trump Lifts Russian Sanctions to Lower Fuel Prices

Donald Trump implemented diesel subsidies and lifted Russian import sanctions to reduce fuel costs before the November 3 midterm elections.

President Donald Trump implemented a series of emergency measures to lower gasoline and diesel prices ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. These actions include a $8 billion diesel-fuel subsidy for farmers and an executive order expanding the use of tax-exempt red dye diesel fuel for farmers and truckers.

To increase supply, the administration temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian diesel imports. These moves follow a period of significant price increases, with national averages reaching $4.29 for gasoline and $6.30 for diesel per gallon. The price spikes are attributed to Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries and the closure of the strait of Hormuz during the U.S. war on Iran.

Energy analysts argue the measures will have zero impact on costs because of existing refinery capacity limits and the small volume of Russian imports. Despite the administration's efforts, polling suggests voters remain deeply upset by energy costs and may punish Republicans in the upcoming elections regardless of any short-term price fluctuations.
