Russia Increases Missile Production as Ukraine Faces Winter Shortages

Russia has increased its missile production to more than 220 units per month, including 65 ballistic missiles, creating a severe defensive imbalance for Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested 300 Patriot interceptors to protect Ukrainian cities from strikes that threaten to eliminate heat and electricity during the winter. This shortage coincides with the closure of Black Sea ports, which have handled 90% of Ukrainian grain exports, since late July.

Diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation have stalled. President Vladimir Putin rejected a ceasefire proposal from Zelenskyy regarding grain industries, insisting that any truce must also include protections for Russian energy infrastructure. In response to the escalating threat, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is searching for additional Patriot systems to bolster Ukrainian defenses.

Ukraine is also attempting to expand its offensive capabilities by seeking approval from Elon Musk to use Starlink-enabled drones to target Russian missile factories and launchers. Musk has previously denied such requests to avoid further escalation of the conflict.
