Trump Halts Russia Sanctions as Peace Talks Near
President Donald Trump paused new sanctions on Russia to protect peace negotiations as Ukraine and Russia exchanged massive drone and missile strikes.
President Donald Trump announced the United States is avoiding new sanctions and escalatory measures against Russia to protect delicate negotiations aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine. Trump stated the parties are the closest they have been to an agreement in a long time, following a meeting in Saint Petersburg between U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, Russia and Ukraine exchanged heavy strikes on October 22, 2026. Russian missiles struck Kyiv, wounding 15 people and damaging subway infrastructure, while another strike in the Kharkiv region killed one woman and drones hit energy infrastructure in Kremenchuk. Simultaneously, Ukraine launched approximately 630 drones toward Moscow and other regions, wounding people in the capital and Lipetsk.
Diplomatic movement continues alongside the violence. The Kremlin and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy both expressed support for resuming trilateral peace talks, potentially in mid-November. As part of recent negotiations, Russia agreed to release U.S. citizen Stephen Hubbard. Additionally, Trump reached an agreement with Russia to sell diesel to lower fuel prices, a move criticized by Ukraine and several European governments. Trump also denied involvement in recent Starlink and Starshield restrictions that disrupted Ukrainian drone operations.
