Trump Reschedules Xi Summit for May Following Iran War

President Donald Trump rescheduled his state visit to Beijing for May 14-15 after postponing an original late-March summit to oversee U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran. The conflict, which began on February 28, forced the U.S. to redeploy significant military resources from the Indo-Pacific to the Middle East, including an aircraft carrier strike group and 2,500 Marines from Okinawa.

While the U.S. administration claims the delay was an operational necessity for the Commander-in-Chief, analysts suggest the war has weakened Trump's negotiating position by depleting missile reserves and disrupting global energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has pressured China to help reopen the strait, but Beijing has remained neutral, though it continues to advocate for a diplomatic resolution to avoid energy disruptions.

The upcoming summit will be Trump's first trip to China in eight years and is expected to focus on trade disputes, agricultural exports, and the security of Taiwan. Trump also announced plans to host President Xi and Madame Peng Liyuan for a reciprocal visit to Washington, D.C., later this year. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the May visit is not contingent on the conclusion of the war, which the administration estimates will last four to six weeks. Trump has maintained that he shares a very good relationship with China, while simultaneously warning that Beijing would face big problems if it provides military support to Tehran.
