Iran and U.S. Face Ceasefire Collapse Amid Maritime Tensions

A two-week ceasefire between Iran, the United States, and Israel, brokered by Pakistan on March 7, faces imminent collapse as it nears its April 22 expiration. The truce is strained by contradictory claims regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz and recent military engagements. While U.S. President Donald Trump claimed the strait was fully open, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Iran would restrict shipping to approved routes if a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports continued.

Ghalibaf asserted that Iran was "victorious in the field," claiming Iranian forces neutralized 180 drones and targeted a U.S. F-35 stealth fighter, forcing it to make an emergency landing. He argued that an asymmetric warfare strategy forced the U.S. to seek a ceasefire and turn to diplomacy after failing to achieve regime change or destroy Iran's missile capabilities. Conversely, U.S. Central Command maintained a blockade on Iranian ports to halt economic trade, and Trump warned Tehran against using the strait for "blackmail."

Diplomatic efforts have struggled despite high-level talks in Islamabad on April 11 between Ghalibaf and U.S. Vice President JD Vance. Ghalibaf acknowledged some progress but stated that fundamental gaps remain. In response to the fragility of the truce, the Israeli army placed forces on high alert and updated target banks for Iranian energy facilities. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a multinational defense mission with over 10 countries to protect freedom of navigation in the region.
