Donald Trump Shifts Foreign Policy Toward America First Strategy
President Donald Trump is implementing an America First policy by withholding arms from Taiwan and straining relations with Canada and European allies.
President Donald Trump has shifted United States foreign policy toward an America First approach, prioritizing strategic pivots toward Russia and China while straining ties with traditional allies. In September, Trump hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping with significant pomp and delivered a critical address at the United Nations.
As part of this strategic shift, Trump is withholding a $14 billion arms package for Taiwan, which he described as "a very good negotiating chip." He has further pressured European allies by threatening to ban the export of American diesel to Europe. In a move toward Russia, Trump invited President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Florida this December.
Relations with North American neighbors have also deteriorated as the White House engages in a trade war with Canada. Trump has specifically attacked proposals for Canada to seek associate membership in the European Union.
