Iran Attacks Tankers as US-Led Coalition Enters Strait of Hormuz

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz amid a multinational naval deployment to clear mines and restore shipping lanes.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired missiles and drones at two commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on July 7, 2026. The attacks targeted a Saudi crude oil tanker and the Qatari LNG vessel Al Rekayyat, causing a fire in the latter's engine room. Iranian state television claimed the strikes followed the vessels' failure to obey transit warnings and route instructions from Tehran.

These escalations occurred as the United Kingdom and France, coordinated with Oman and supported by 19 NATO members, deployed a multinational naval armada to the waterway. The mission aims to secure commercial shipping and clear approximately 80 Iranian-laid mines. This deployment follows a joint declaration by French President Emmanuel Macron and outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer identifying the strait as a vital global artery.

The violence marks a breakdown of a fragile June 17 memorandum of understanding intended to end hostilities following a U.S.-led war launched in February. President Donald Trump threatened to destroy Iranian bridges and energy supplies to force a permanent deal, stating the U.S. would either reach an agreement or finish the job. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected these threats, asserting that negotiations cannot begin while U.S. military pressure continues.

The maritime crisis coincides with mass mourning in Tehran and Qom for the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy's Joint Maritime Information Center maintains that southern shipping routes near Oman remain open, contradicting Iranian demands that all tankers use Tehran-approved paths.
