Ukraine Requests Billions from EU for Patriot Missiles

The Government of Ukraine has formally requested several billion euros from the European Union's 90 billion euro support loan to purchase U.S.-made PAC-3 Patriot air defense systems. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the request, stating the funds would address critical air defense needs for the country.

Despite the request, EU foreign affairs official Kaja Kallas reported that a meeting of defense ministers yielded no concrete success in securing the funding. Kallas advocated for the transfer of Patriot missiles that are nearing their NATO expiration dates to help bridge the gap.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Ukrainian cities remain vulnerable to Russian ballistic missiles, claiming Ukraine possesses only 1% of the U.S. stockpile required to survive the winter. While Donald Trump previously announced that Washington would grant Ukraine the right to manufacture Patriot systems locally, officials noted that establishing such production capabilities would take years to implement.
