Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December to sign a trade deal. The visit is timed to coincide with the G20 summit in Doral, Florida, where Carney aims to conclude negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by mid-December.
Diplomatic relations have normalized since Carney took office in March 2025, following a period of severe tension under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. A July finding by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police concluded that no evidence linked Indian officials to the killing, facilitating a diplomatic reset. On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Indian External Affairs Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar met to elevate bilateral ties and collaborate on the Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace & Prosperity initiative to support United Nations reform.
The two nations seek to increase annual two-way trade to 70 billion Canadian dollars by 2030. This economic push includes a $2.6 billion agreement for Cameco to supply India with uranium for nuclear power between 2027 and 2035. Additionally, the governments have reopened discussions on national security, focusing on immigration enforcement, cybercrime, and terrorism. Carney stated that the strategy aims to reduce Canada's economic reliance on the United States by diversifying partnerships with large economies.
