Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canada After Trade Talks Collapse

President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion to $28 billion of Canadian imports on August 22, 2026, after trade negotiations collapsed. However, the deal fell apart on August 21 when Carney withdrew the Canadian team. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed the possibility of a symmetrical trade war, mocking Canada's economic size, while Canadian provincial leaders expressed a mix of support for the federal response and concern over the impact on small businesses.
