Democrats Win Control of House and Senate in Midterms

Democrats regained control of both houses of Congress and flipped key Southern states in a decisive electoral defeat for President Donald Trump.

The Democratic Party won control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. The result, described as a blue tsunami, saw Democrats secure approximately 255 to 258 House seats and flip at least seven Senate seats in traditionally Republican strongholds, including Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, and Maine.

Donald Trump suffered a significant electoral defeat, with voters citing high living costs, inflation, and the administration's handling of the war in Iran as primary drivers. Trump attributed the losses to his absence from the ballot, claiming a landslide victory would have occurred had he been a candidate. In Texas, Democrats ended 32 years of Republican dominance by sweeping all statewide offices, including the governorship, where Gina Hinojosa became the state's first Latina governor, and the U.S. Senate seat, won by James Talarico.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become the first Black speaker in U.S. history. While the new Democratic-led Congress possesses the power to investigate the executive branch and block presidential nominees, the party remains divided internally between progressives and moderates. Internationally, the Kremlin expressed hope that Trump would continue peacekeeping efforts to end the war in Ukraine, with discussions underway for a trilateral meeting between the leaders of the U.S., Russia, and China in Shenzhen.
