Trump Launches 'Economic D-Day' Campaign to Isolate Iran

President Donald Trump initiated a massive economic warfare campaign to collapse the Iranian regime following a six-month military stalemate and the failure of peace negotiations.

President Donald Trump announced a massive economic campaign against Iran on August 20, 2026, which he termed "ECONOMIC D-DAY" and "Operation Economic Fury." Described as the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country, the initiative seeks to isolate Tehran through unprecedented sanctions and a naval blockade to force the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the termination of Iran's nuclear program.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent detailed the strategy as a "one-two punch" combining the toughest sanctions in history with a naval blockade. The U.S. has warned that any nation providing a "lifeline" to the regime—specifically through oil smuggling or financial transfers—will face tremendous economic consequences. This escalation follows the expiration of a 60-day memorandum of understanding and a six-month war that began in February. While Trump claims the U.S. essentially controls the strait and has "wiped out" Iran's military infrastructure, Iranian officials reject these claims and have continued to target shipping in the waterway.

Regional responses are divided. The United Arab Emirates suspended all trade and financial transactions with Iran following alleged Iranian ballistic missile strikes. Conversely, the Government of China, Iran's primary oil buyer, rejected the pressure campaign and urged diplomatic resolutions. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the operation as "economic terrorism" and a diversion from U.S. domestic debt, which has surpassed $40 trillion. In response to the pressure, Iran has deepened ties with Russia and China and considered withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
