US and Brazil Face Tensions After Trump Grants Bolsonaro Refuge

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira will meet to address diplomatic friction after Donald Trump granted refuge to Flávio Bolsonaro.

Diplomatic tensions have emerged between the United States and Brazil after Donald Trump granted refuge to Flávio Bolsonaro, a defeated right-wing presidential candidate and senator. The friction led U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to agree to a meeting in the coming weeks to address the situation. The two officials spoke briefly on Friday during a Group of 20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta and scheduled a follow-up before the G-20 summit in Miami this December.

Flávio Bolsonaro fled Brazil on October 27, 2026, traveling via private jet through Argentina and Ecuador before arriving in Florida on October 28. His departure followed a move by Brazilian police on October 26 to revoke his passports as part of a money laundering investigation. In a subsequent Instagram livestream, Bolsonaro claimed he is a victim of "persecution" and accused Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes of making false accusations against him.

Bolsonaro also alleged irregularities in the October 25 election runoff, which he lost to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. While expressing intent to run for president again before 2030, he predicted the Brazilian economy would fail under the current administration. Both President Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei are facing pressure to clarify their governments' roles in facilitating the senator's escape.
