Jensen Huang Urges Europe to Prioritize AI Innovation Over Regulation
Nvidia Corporation CEO Jensen Huang is investing $10 billion across Europe to promote sovereign AI infrastructure while urging leaders to reduce regulatory restrictions.
CEO Jensen Huang is conducting a European tour to promote sovereign AI, a strategy encouraging nations to build and control their own AI infrastructure and data to reduce reliance on U.S. and Chinese technology giants. As part of this global expansion, which includes similar efforts in India, Saudi Arabia, and Africa, Huang announced roughly $10 billion in European investments, including stakes in several startups across France and Britain and the unveiling of a supercomputer in Sweden.
During his visits to France, Sweden, the UK, and Germany, Huang urged European leaders to prioritize innovation over regulation to avoid falling behind in the global AI race. He argued that policymakers should regulate specific AI applications rather than the underlying technology, stating, "There's nothing to regulate if the industry doesn't thrive." In London, he criticized a national tendency to "overthink things" despite a smart workforce.
In Berlin, Huang met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss using AI in robotics and heavy industry as a solution to Germany's recent economic recessions. While Merz acknowledged the need for a balance between innovation and regulation, Huang warned that excessive deliberation could drive meaningful innovation elsewhere. This push for new government customers comes as Wall Street questions the sustainability of the AI boom and the stability of neocloud providers who borrow heavily to purchase Nvidia Corporation chips.
