U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sparked a diplomatic row after posting an image of two young women in uniform from the Cadet Training Centre in Vernon, British Columbia. Hegseth captioned the photo with a Canadian flag and the phrase "this is real," leading critics to argue he unfairly targeted a youth program to disparage the appearance of the women and the Canadian Armed Forces.

The Pentagon defended the social media activity. Deputy press secretary Jacob Bliss stated that the post "speaks for itself." In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the message as "beneath their office."

The incident follows a period of heightened tension between the two nations after trade negotiations collapsed last month.
