Zelensky Criticizes Trump Over Russian Sanctions and Energy Deals

Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Donald Trump for easing sanctions on Russia and importing Russian diesel, marking a sharp decline in relations between the two leaders.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for his approach to Russia, signaling a breakdown in their diplomatic relationship. The tension follows a series of U.S. policy shifts, including a deal to import Russian diesel to lower global fuel prices and an executive order halting most sanctions mandated by the Lindsey Graham Act.

Relations deteriorated further after Russian missiles struck Kyiv without the customary U.S. warnings. Additionally, Trump pressured Ukraine to cease its strikes on Russian refineries without offering any concessions in return. Zelensky characterized Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "real evil of today" and argued that Trump's preference for dealing with Putin is a mistake.

Trump responded by stating he is "not a big fan of Zelensky" and claimed the Ukrainian leader is difficult to deal with. Despite the friction, Ukraine remains heavily dependent on the United States for weapons sales, Starlink contracts, and critical intelligence-sharing. While European allies expressed support for Zelensky during a summit in Brussels, the shift in U.S. policy leaves Ukraine in a precarious position as Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian infrastructure.
