Ajit Doval Visits Beijing for Border Dispute Talks
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval travels to Beijing for boundary negotiations ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi this September.
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval will travel to Beijing on Monday to hold the 25th round of Special Representatives' talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday. The meeting aims to address the 3,488-km boundary dispute along the Line of Actual Control and stabilize bilateral ties following the 2020 military confrontation in eastern Ladakh.
The diplomatic push occurs ahead of the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13. Officials anticipate that Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the summit, which would mark his first visit to India in seven years and potentially include a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Despite efforts to normalize relations, including the resumption of direct flights and eased visa restrictions, significant tensions remain. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that peace and tranquillity in border areas is a prerequisite for good relations. These comments follow reports of increased Chinese troop activity in the Upper Subansiri region of Arunachal Pradesh and a dispute over India's formal naming of 27 geographical features in the state.
While Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun characterized the border situation as generally stable, India continues to assert that the state of the border will determine the overall course of the relationship.
